George Evers discovered its ancient existence in 1862, in an Egyptian papyrus from 1500 BC. Greek and Roman doctors used it with great success as a medicinal herb. Researchers have discovered that ancient Chinese and Indian cultures also used aloe vera. Egyptian royalty used it in their search for physical beauty, and in the Philippines it is used together with milk to cure nephritis. Aloe vera plants are mentioned in the Bible, and legend has it that Alexander the Great conquered the island of Socotra in the Indian Ocean in order to gain a strategic advantage, by supplying aloe vera plants to treat the battle wounds of his soldiers.
